I photographed a fascinating story for Atlas Obscura about groundbreaking research happening in Monterey Bay’s deep sea—one of the least understood ecosystems on Earth. Scientists are uncovering everything from bioluminescent creatures to the deep sea’s ability to store carbon, revealing how this hidden world plays a crucial role in the planet’s health and the fight against climate change.
The visuals editor and I agreed to lean into the ethereal, otherworldly quality of this environment. For me, this meant balancing the vastness of the ocean with the intricate beauty of the organisms that call it home. I wanted the images to feel mysterious and captivating, echoing the sense of discovery at the heart of the research.
This assignment let me merge two things I love: science and storytelling. I always feel privileged to connect people with places they may never see firsthand. Photographing the deep sea is a reminder of just how complex and vital our planet is—and how much there is still to protect.
